Dodge Data & Analytics, New York, has reported construction starts dropped 19.9% in June after climbing 34.1% in May.
Nonresidential building construction fell 9.1% in June as manufacturing starts declined 62.9%; institutional starts climbed 2.5%; and commercial starts increased 1.2%.
Residential building construction fell by 2.2% in June. Single-family housing decreased 3.4%, and multifamily starts fell 0.4%.
Nonbuilding construction fell 37.7% in June.
For the 12 months ending June, total construction starts were up 10.6% compared with the 12 months ending June 2025. Nonbuilding construction rose 34.3%; nonresidential building climbed 4.9%; and residential building fell 3.6%.
“After strong megaproject activity in May, construction starts came back down to earth throughout the month of June,” said Sarah Martin, director of economic research at Dodge Construction Network. “Residential and institutional construction remain weak, while commercial, industrial and nonbuilding construction continue to show strong year-to-date growth.”
